Transparency International Kenya awarded the Kagua Kiongozi Video Competition Winners on Friday 14th July 2017 at Daystar University, Valley road. The video competition, which targeted university students, saw Reuben Omulo (St. Pauls University), Nicholas Ngure (Kenyatta University), Victor Ochieng (USIU Africa), Mutua Kisali (St. Pauls University) and Donald Magomere (Maseno University) receive prizes.
John Henry Juma, a member of the Board of Directors at TI-Kenya, graced the ceremony. He congratulated the winners while noting the contribution of the youth towards an informed citizenry in electoral issues. Mr. Juma outlined the importance of integrity among leaders and urged the youth to be on the forefront in advancing the course. He said that TI-Kenya has been consistent in advocating for the implementation of the requirements of Chapter Six by the relevant agencies. He further urged citizens to vet their leaders before voting.
“Vet your leader before you vote and make an informed decision by voting for individuals that espouse integrity.” Said Mr. Juma.
During the ceremony, TI- Kenya’s Head of Programmes, Sheila Masinde took participants through the Kagua Kiongozi Project. Key highlights included the aim of the project, the vetting process and the outcomes of the project.
The video competition aimed at enhancing citizens’ capacity to influence integrity and accountability as constitutional benchmarks for electing leaders and increase awareness on the electoral process, policy and laws and the electoral candidates by the citizenry.
The wining video clips are being used to create awareness on various electoral themes including social vetting, voter bribery, and the role citizens can play in monitoring funding for campaign activities and reporting malpractices. These videos are being disseminated during public forums and through social media, to enhance citizens’ capacity to influence integrity and accountability as constitutional benchmarks in the elections.
Kagua Kiongozi project is among TI-Kenya’s election interventions being implemented in Uasin Gishu and Machakos Counties and at the national level through media advocacy ahead of the August 2017 General Elections. The intervention includes Social Vetting Forums dubbed #KaguaKiongozi (Vet your leader) to influence the election of individuals that espouse integrity.
